We sell the Breville Barista Express (model BES870XL, US 120 V) as refurbished — open box. Here is exactly what that means for the machine you receive.
In short
- Not new: each unit has been opened before or used as a display unit.
- Inspected, cleaned, descaled and test-brewed before it ships.
- May show light cosmetic marks; covered by our 1-year warranty.
Where these machines come from
They are open-box or display units: machines whose box has been opened, or that have been on show. They are not sold as new, and they are not Breville “certified refurbished” units.
What we do before it ships
- Inspect the body, controls, portafilter, steam wand and power cord.
- Clean the brew head, drip tray, water tank and bean hopper.
- Descale the water path.
- Test-brew: grind, pull a shot and run the steam wand to check the pump, heating and grinder.
- Check the accessories against the list under In the box on the product page.
What it may look like
An open-box unit may show light cosmetic marks such as fine scratches or scuffs on the stainless steel. These do not affect how it works. It may come in the original Breville box or a plain replacement box with protective packing.

The machine itself
The Barista Express grinds beans with a built-in conical burr grinder (16 settings), uses a 54 mm portafilter with an 18 g dose, heats with a Thermocoil and PID temperature control at 200°F, and has a manual steam wand. The full specification is on the product page.
